About the Performance

JS Bach's cantatas lie at the heart of his musical output; a huge body of vocal and instrumental music composed to enhance and enrich religious ceremonies and social occasions.

In 1705 Bach went to Lübeck to study with the great composer and organist Dietrich Buxtehude. Juxtaposing two cantatas by Buxtehude with early works Bach completed soon after this Lübeck visit, this concert promises to illuminate the inspiring influence Buxtehude had on the young master.
